I came across this article as a member of the National College for DUI Defense. Though such is from Philadelphia newspaper, it is certainly applicable to what goes on with DUI arrests here in Washington State.
The article clearly details how a New Jersey assemblyman, and former mayor, was wrongly arrested for DUI by a local law enforcement. While improper DUI arrests are far more common than one might think, this matter is even more disturbing as the evidence strongly indicates that the arresting officer falsified his police report and targeted the assemblyman because he had been a key figure in tumultuous ongoing police contract negotiations. Fortunately, this particular officer's patrol vehicle was equipped with a video/audio capability, and the entire contact was recorded. The assemblyman is heard telling the officer that he had not consumed ANY alcohol. Further, the assemblyman doesn't display a single clue of intoxication.
In my experience, the majority of law enforcement officers here in Washington State are straight-shooters (heck, I have even had cops invite and take me on ride-alongs with them). However, all cops are human; all people/cops have their own biases; and let's be clear, it is never in a law enforcement officer;s best interests to write as fair of a Police Report as possible.
